in “Private Eye” 30 June 1972It’s an expression that probably doesn’t get exercised much nowadays, but it used to be common to describe some flaming queen as a “Roaring Poof”. And it is a truth universally acknowledged that a cartoonist in need of filling space will illustrate comedically any popular phrase currently doing the rounds. There’s a hint of comment in that such a mincing creature, despite looking as though he’s about to pounce, is nowhere near as intimidating or threatening as the noise he makes.
